Happy Thanksgiving!

As family and friends gather around the Thanksgiving table this year, all of us at AFIPO are especially grateful for you! We are thankful for your ongoing support of the Israel Philharmonic to bring joy and inspiration to audiences worldwide.

We invite you to listen to this performance of “Zemer Nogeh” performed by the Israel Philharmonic with special guests Rona Kenan, Ester Rada, Doron Talmon, and Lihi Toledano. The song’s beautiful lyrics—”Will you hear my voice so far away from me? Will you hear my voice where ever you are?”—captures the Thanksgiving spirit of celebrating those closest to us, no matter the distance.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with warmth, laughter, and harmony—together, let us carry forward the spirit of gratitude.

The lyrics were written by Rachel Bluwstein, and were inspired by real-life events. In 1913, Rachel left Israel for France to study agriculture in Toulouse, where she met Michael Bernstein, an engineer, and fell in love with him. With the outbreak of World War I, her studies were interrupted and the two returned to Russia. Some time later, Rachel decided to return to Israel, but Bernstein refused.

These lyrics are a letter of longing to the love of her life whom she never saw again until her dying day, and were written by Rachel in 1929. Alona Einstein showed the poem to Shmulik Kraus in 1967, and he composed the music on the spot.
