CARNEGIE HALL PERFORMANCES – OCTOBER 2025

Israel Philharmonic with soloist Pinchas Zukerman
Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 8pm
Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Enjoy the first of the week’s three concerts by the storied Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lahav Shani. Tonight only, they are joined by the great Israeli American violinist Pinchas Zukerman, who boasts one of the most jaw-dropping Carnegie Hall resumes of the past 60 years. Together, they present the Hall’s first-ever performance of Ben-Haim’s Violin Concerto, a true hidden gem that Zukerman himself only recently discovered. The program also features Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a musical rollercoaster known for its Beethoven-inspired “fate” motif and exhilarating finale.

Tonight’s program starts with Leonard Bernstein’s soulful, but oft-overlooked flute concerto, Halil, which the IPO premiered under Bernstein’s own baton. Ben-Haim’s First Symphony, completed in 1940, is a multifaceted work that includes references to Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony, direct quotes from traditional Persian Jewish music, and a theme from Ben-Haim’s final completed work before he left his native Germany. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a forceful—and ultimately hopeful—contemplation on fate.

Zankel Hall
Members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) perform a powerful chamber music program with esteemed soloists. IPO conductor Lahav Shani makes his Carnegie Hall debut as a pianist, revisiting the role that launched his decades-long relationship with the orchestra. Violin virtuoso and Carnegie Hall favorite Pinchas Zukerman’s astonishing history with the IPO goes back even further. Completing this tightly knit lineup is Amanda Forsyth, an acclaimed cellist and founding member of the Zukerman Chamber Players, whose own Carnegie Hall debut was as a soloist with the IPO. In the intimacy of Zankel Hall, they perform masterworks by Shostakovich and Felix Mendelssohn, plus enchanting works by the German-born Israeli composer Ben-Haim.

Experience the week’s final performance by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Music Director Lahav Shani. Tonight’s program continues their powerful survey of symphonic pillars by Tchaikovsky and rarely heard works by foundational Israeli composer Ben-Haim. Wonderfully orchestrated and excitingly varied across its four movements, Ben-Haim’s Second Symphony is the composer’s grandest symphonic creation. Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, “Pathétique,” premiered just days before the composer’s death, and it is one of the most impassioned and poetic farewells in music.
