Enescu Music Festival Bucharest

BY PETER MARCK

Can you imagine Beethoven on the Euro coin, Michael Jackson on the one dollar bill or the Beatles on the Pound Sterling? In Romania, George Enescu, the national composer, is on the 5 Lei bill, and the Israel Philharmonic was once again at the Enescu Festival for 2 concerts.  On Tuesday night we performed Schoenberg and Bruckner and on Wednesday night Enescu’s “Symphonic Poem Vox Maris” (Song of the Sea) and Mahler’s Ninth Symphony.  The Sala Palatului was packed both nights and both concerts were broadcast live on television.

From Bucharest, we continue East to Yerevan, Armenia to perform at the festival of another national composer, Aram Khatchaturyan.
